Keeping track of usernames and passwords is one of the biggest challenges that people face in their digital life. Luckily, there is a solution for this problem. Unfortunately, not everyone utilizes it. The simplest way to manage usernames, passwords and other confidential information is to use a Password Manager. Let me put it this way. In my opinion, if you use a computer or smartphone, then you need a password manager.

10 Reasons Why You Should Use a Password Manager

There are many advantages of using a password manager. Here are ten good reasons why you should use a password manager.

  1. You only have to remember one master password that gives you access to all your other passwords.
  2. You can use the same password manager across multiple browsers and across multiple devices.
  3. You can generate random passwords of certain lengths easily, which are much more secure than the passwords that are based on commonly used words or phrases.
  4. When a Web site forces you to update your password, you can update it very easily.
  5. Logging in to websites is very easy because the password manager can automatically fill the login information for you. There is nothing for you to memorize and it takes only one click to log in.
  6. A cloud-based password manager is available to you on any computer or mobile device that is connected to the Internet. Most password managers can also be used offline.
  7. In addition to the passwords, you can use a password manager to document pretty much any type of confidential information, such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, Wi-Fi passwords, security alarm codes, and information related to home, auto, health, and car insurance.
  8. Upload files to store scanned copies of important documents, such as birth certificates, passport and immigration documents, your personal will, Power of Attorney documents, college diplomas, etc.
  9. Your information is secure because it is encrypted.
  10. It can help you be compliant with industry regulations, such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). It can also help you change your passwords frequently to meet your company’s password policy.

It’s important that your master password, which allows you to access the password manager, is very strong. Follow the guidelines provided by your password manager software for creating a secure master password. If someone hacks into your password manager, all your confidential information will be exposed. As a best practice, use a strong master password along with multifactor authentication (MFA). An MFA will require a password and a security code displayed on an authenticator app to get into your account, so even if someone knows your password, without the code displayed on your authenticator app on your smartphone the person won’t be able to log in to your account.

We don’t live in a perfect world, so I don’t want to give you an impression that your password manager can never be hacked. Of course, it can be hacked, but not very easily. All I can tell you is that you will be way better off by using a password manager than using whatever method you are currently using to keep your usernames and passwords secure. As I have already mentioned earlier, in my opinion everyone who uses a computer or a smartphone should use a password manager. Of course, you can use a password manager with other mobile devices too, such as a laptop, tablet, etc.

Password Manager is one way for people at home to protect their privacy and keep their confidential data secure, but businesses can also implement password managers to secure their business assets and comply with industry regulations. Just make sure your employees attend cybersecurity awareness training. If the employees realize how they can benefit from using password managers, understand the consequences of becoming a victim of identity theft, and know the dangers of ransomware attacks, they are much more likely to avoid being victims of social engineering. They will also be more inclined to protect the company’s business assets and safeguard the intellectual property.
