I recently read this article on the Reuters’ Web site titled The World’s Most Innovative Universities. Reuters decided to use 10 different metrics to rank the world’s top 100 most innovative universities. The top ranked university in the world was Stanford, which to me was not a surprise. Even though I am a graduate of University of Washington (UW) and love the UW Huskies, I consider Stanford as one of the best universities in the United States. Being ranked #1 in the world is quite an honor because United States is a very young country (less than 250 years old) and Stanford is only 130 years old (founded in 1885), so younger than UW. According to Reuters:

“The criteria focused on academic papers, which indicate basic research performed at a university, and patent filings, which point to an institution’s interest in protecting and commercializing its discoveries. Compiled by the Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the list uses proprietary data and analysis tools.”

The methodology used by Reuters includes some interesting criteria and contains all the details on how they came up with the criteria. They used the criteria that contributed to the composite score, which lead to the ranking of the top 100 universities.

On the top 100 list, 9 out of 10 are from the United States. South Korea is the only non-US country represented in the top 100. Keep in mind that this is not a list of the overall best universities in the world, these are the top ranked “most innovative universities” in the world.

  1. Stanford
  2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  3. Harvard University
  4. University of Washington
  5. University of Michigan System
  6. Northwestern University
  7. University of Texas System
  8. University of Wisconsin System
  9. University of Pennsylvania
  10. Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIS)

University of Washington, which has 43,888 students and 3,666 academic staff members, receives more federal research funding than any other public university in the United States. In 2014, University of Washington received $1.39 billion in research and grants ($1.08 billions of which came from federal sources). It filed 412 patents, out of which 157 (38%) were granted. University of Washington also focuses on degrees in Science, Technology and Engineering (STEM) and in fall 2014, almost 37% of its students were pursuing degrees in STEM. The Seattleites refer to the University of Washington as U-Dub (short for UW).

Check out the comparison of the top 100 universities. Did you know that companies formed by Stanford entrepreneurs generate a revenue of $2.7 trillion annually? HP, Google and Yahoo are among the tech giants founded by Stanford’s faculty and alumni.
