For most users, multiple OneDrives can be very confusing. You can end up with more than one OneDrive if you have a personal OneDrive (e.g. the one that comes with Windows 10) and you install Office 2013, which includes OneDrive for Business, or you may have installed OneDrive for Business as a stand-alone product. In this article I will show you how to disable ore remove OneDrive in Windows 10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: <em>OneDrive used to be called SkyDrive and OneDrive for Business used to be called SkyDrive Pro. Due to legal issues, Microsoft was unable to use the name SkyDrive so the name was changed to OneDrive.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In case you are wondering, here&#8217;s the difference between OneDrive and OneDrive for Business.<\/span><\/p>\n<table class=\" alignleft\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color: #deabab;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Product<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"background-color: #deabab;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Description<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left; vertical-align: top;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">OneDrive<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: left; vertical-align: top;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This product is included in Outlook.com account, Windows phone and Windows 10. People can use OneDrive to store their personal files securely in the cloud on Microsoft&#8217;s servers. Think of OneDrive as your own personal file server hosted by Microsoft. You can access the files on OneDrive from anywhere and share them with certain people, just like you would on a file server. You can either give them read-only access, or give them the ability to edit the files.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left; vertical-align: top;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">OneDrive for Business<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: left; vertical-align: top;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">OneDrive for Business is not really the personal OneDrive product enhanced for business use, as one might assume. The two products have very little in common. OneDrive for Business works with SharePoint, while OneDrive does not. You can either install OneDrive for Business as part of Microsoft Office 2013, or download it from Microsoft as a stand-alone product. OneDrive for Business is also the new name for what used to be called <em>My Site<\/em> in SharePoint. In SharePoint 2013, My Site has been replaced with OneDrive for Business.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you have both OneDrive personal and OneDrive for Business on your computer, you will notice that the clouds icon in the taskbar is gray for personal OneDrive and dark blue for OneDrive for Business, as shown below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/OneDrives.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6591\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/OneDrives.png\" alt=\"OneDrives\" width=\"261\" height=\"115\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In File Explorer the icons are dark blue in both cases.\u00a0In the image below, the first OneDrive is my personal OneDrive connected to Outlook.com and requires me to sign in with my Microsoft account at Outlook.com. The second OneDrive is my OneDrive for Business and requires me to use my Office 365 account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/OneDrivesInFileExplorer.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6592\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/OneDrivesInFileExplorer.png\" alt=\"OneDrivesInFileExplorer\" width=\"231\" height=\"123\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Disabling OneDrive in Windows 10<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Getting rid of the OneDrive in Windows 10 is not as easy as one might think. You can get rid of the OneDrive icon in the taskbar by exiting OneDrive but that doesn&#8217;t disable OneDrive from other places in Windows 10, such as File Explorer. To disable OneDrive completely you have to use the Group Policy Editor. This will prevent it from syncing with the cloud, or connecting with other apps. Notice I used the word<em> disable<\/em>, not <em>remove<\/em>. By disabling OneDrive, you can re-enable it any time if there is a need. Here&#8217;s how.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you want to disable your personal OneDrive that is included in Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise then first exit the OneDrive. Right-click the OneDrive gray icon in the taskbar and select Exit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Type <strong>gpedit.msc<\/strong> in the Windows 10 Search box to locate the Group Policy Editor. You will not be able to use the Group Policy Editor in Windows 10 Home version.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GroupPolicyEditor.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6594\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6594\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GroupPolicyEditor-173x300.png\" alt=\"GroupPolicyEditor\" width=\"173\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GroupPolicyEditor-173x300.png 173w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GroupPolicyEditor.png 357w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: <em>Never install a home version of any Microsoft operating system (Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, etc.) on your home computer because it is essentially a limited version of the actual operating system, such as the &#8220;Pro&#8221; version.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the Local Computer Policy go to Computer Configuration -&gt; Administrative Templates -&gt; Windows Components -&gt; OneDrive. You will notice the setting <strong>Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage<\/strong>. By default, this setting is not configured.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDrive.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6595\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDrive-300x167.png\" alt=\"PreventUsageOfOneDrive\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDrive-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDrive-768x426.png 768w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDrive.png 888w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Double-click the setting, select the <strong>Enabled<\/strong> radio button, and then click <strong>OK<\/strong>. By enabling this setting you are disabling your OneDrive on your computer. Keep in mind that when you modify the local policy it will effect everyone who uses your computer. In other words, no one will be able to use OneDrive on this particular computer.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDriveEnabled.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6596\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDriveEnabled-300x279.png\" alt=\"PreventUsageOfOneDriveEnabled\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDriveEnabled-300x279.png 300w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/PreventUsageOfOneDriveEnabled.png 684w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Close the Group Policy Editor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reboot your computer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When you login to your computer your OneDrive for Business should still be there. You may have to sign into your account. Your personal OneDrive should no longer be on the taskbar or in the File Explorer. If you see it in the File Explorer, wait for a few minutes and it should go away. At least that&#8217;s what my experience has been. If you are still seeing OneDrive in some places then try using the following techniques in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-US\/article\/Turn-off-or-uninstall-OneDrive-f32a17ce-3336-40fe-9c38-6efb09f944b0\" target=\"_blank\">this article<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">from Microsoft.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the Notifications area on the bottom of the Windows screen, right-click the <b class=\"ocpUI\">OneDrive<\/b> icon. You might have to click the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Show Hidden Icons<\/b> arrow to find OneDrive.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click <b class=\"ocpUI\">Settings<\/b>, and on the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Settings<\/b> tab, uncheck all the boxes under <b class=\"ocpUI\">General<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Auto save<\/b> tab, set the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Documents and Pictures<\/b> lists to <b class=\"ocpUI\">This PC only<\/b>, and uncheck the other boxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Account<\/b> tab, click <b class=\"ocpUI\">Choose folders<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Sync your OneDrive files to this PC<\/b> box, check and uncheck the box at <b class=\"ocpUI\">Sync all files and folders in my OneDrive<\/b>. (The first check selects all the boxes, then the uncheck clears them all.) Click <b class=\"ocpUI\">OK<\/b> to close the box and return to settings.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This step removes all OneDrive files from your computer, but leaves them on OneDrive.com.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click <b class=\"ocpUI\">OK<\/b> to save your changes in the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Settings<\/b> box.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Open the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Settings<\/b> box again: In the Notifications area, right-click the <b class=\"ocpUI\">OneDrive<\/b> icon, click <b class=\"ocpUI\">Settings<\/b>. On the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Account<\/b> tab, click <b class=\"ocpUI\">Unlink OneDrive<\/b>. Close the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Welcome to OneDrive<\/b> box that appears.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Open File Explorer, right-click <b class=\"ocpUI\">OneDrive<\/b>, and then click <b class=\"ocpUI\">Properties<\/b>.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the <b class=\"ocpUI\">General<\/b> tab, next to <b class=\"ocpUI\">Attributes<\/b>, check the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Hidden<\/b> box. This hides OneDrive from File Explorer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One more time, back in the Notifications area, right-click the <b class=\"ocpUI\">OneDrive<\/b> icon and click <b class=\"ocpUI\">Exit<\/b>. This removes the OneDrive icon from the Notifications area.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">WARNING! <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to Microsoft, OneDrive cannot be uninstalled from all versions of Windows 10 because it is built into Windows 10. Although it is possible, depending on your Windows version, to remove OneDrive from Windows 10, I recommend that you only disable OneDrive through Group Policy and then hide it from Windows 10, rather than completely removing it because there&#8217;s a lot of cleanup you will have to do to completely remove it from your computer. Also keep in mind that because OneDrive is built into Windows 10, removing it (rather than disabling it) may have some unexpected consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Removing OneDrive Completely in Windows 10<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Again, I don&#8217;t recommend removing OneDrive completely because you can always disable it and hide it. However, if you must then you can remove OneDrive from your Windows 10 by using the following command on a 32-bit computer. Make sure that you are logged in as an Administrator:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><code>%SystemRoot%\\System32\\OneDriveSetup.exe \/uninstall<\/code><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On a 64-bit computer use the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><code>%SystemRoot%\\SysWOW64\\OneDriveSetup.exe<\/code> <code>\/uninstall<\/code><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To reinstall OneDrive on a 64-bit computer, you will use the above command without \/uninstall switch at the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><code>%SystemRoot%\\SysWOW64\\OneDriveSetup.exe<\/code><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small; font-family: Verdana;\">Copyright \u00a9 2016 SeattlePro Enterprises, LLC.
