I had a client who ran into this situation and was able to fix using the technique described below.<\/p>\n<p>1. Uninstall the SharePoint support from Office 2007 applications (e.g. Visio).<\/p>\n<p>2. Set the document files (e.g Word, Excel) to not open in the browser as follows. This procedure is for Windows XP Professional.<\/p>\n<p>a) Open Windows Explorer.<\/p>\n<p>b) Go to Tools, Folder Options.<\/p>\n<p>c) Click on File Types tab.<\/p>\n<p>d) Highlight the document extension for the file type, e.g. highlight DOC in the extensions column.<\/p>\n<p>e) Click on Advanced button.<\/p>\n<p>f) Uncheck the box &#8220;Browse in same window.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>g) Click OK twice to close all windows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/browse-in-same-window.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-644\" title=\"browse-in-same-window\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/browse-in-same-window-300x274.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/browse-in-same-window-300x274.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/browse-in-same-window.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Make sure you do this for other file types that are causing this problem, e.g. Excel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;ve run into a situation where a user can open a Word 2003 file on SharePoint Server but is directed to save the file locally, try the following solution.
