It&#8217;s not really an error or warning, it&#8217;s just a notification that something in your settings may require your attention. It also hints that the issue is related to the file types associated with the Word program.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-01.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-01.png\" alt=\"Word isn't your default program\" width=\"440\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-01.png 440w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-01-300x100.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Microsoft Word isn&#8217;t your default program for viewing and editing documents. Do you want to select the file types that Word should open?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t see this message when I logged in locally to a Windows 10 computer. However, after I joined the computer to the domain, I saw this message on the new domain-joined profile. I went to <strong>Settings -&gt; Apps -&gt; Default apps -&gt; Choose default apps by file types<\/strong>, but Word was associated with all the file types I want. If you see file types .DOCMHTML File and .DOS File in that section, just ignore them because they are not Word files.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-02.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-02.png\" alt=\"Word is not default program\" width=\"479\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-02.png 479w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-02-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I then went to the hyperlink <strong>Set defaults by app<\/strong>, as shown below. I wanted to make sure that the default for my apps were properly configured.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-03.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-03.png\" alt=\"Word is not your default program\" width=\"794\" height=\"896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-03.png 794w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-03-266x300.png 266w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-03-768x867.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I looked for Word in the list and clicked <strong>Manage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-04.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-04.png\" alt=\"Word is not your default program\" width=\"480\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-04.png 480w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-04-279x300.png 279w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I noticed that all file types were properly associated with Microsoft Word. I had manually associated the Rich Text Format (.rtf) with WordPad because I don&#8217;t want that associated with Word. I noticed that as soon as I associated .rtf with Word again and then restarted Word, the message disappeared. However, that&#8217;s not what I wanted. I want .rtf files to be associated with WordPad so whenever I double-click a file with .rtf extension it opens in WordPad, not in Word. I reverted my Rich File Format (.rtf) files back to WordPad.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-05.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-05.png\" alt=\"Word is not your default program\" width=\"444\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-05.png 444w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-05-156x300.png 156w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I restarted Word and simply turned off the message by selecting the box <strong>Don&#8217;t show this message again<\/strong> and clicked <strong>Yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dont-show-this-message-again.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dont-show-this-message-again.png\" alt=\"Don't show this message again\" width=\"443\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dont-show-this-message-again.png 443w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dont-show-this-message-again-300x102.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t do this in the first place because I wanted to make sure that the Word is properly configured as the default program for viewing and editing documents. Once I have confirmed that Word was properly configured and the file type associations were all correct, I decided to turn the message off because I knew it was safe to do so. Just so you know, this action is exactly the same as going to <strong>File -&gt; Options -&gt; General tab<\/strong> and then clearing the option under the <strong>Startup type options<\/strong> section for <strong>Tell me if Microsoft Word isn&#8217;t the default program for viewing and editing documents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-06.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-06.png\" alt=\"Word is not your default program\" width=\"677\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-06.png 677w, https:\/\/www.zubairalexander.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Word-is-not-default-program-06-300x127.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 677px) 100vw, 677px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color: #e3e3e3; text-align: left;\">Thanks for reading my article.
