Zubair started his technology career in IT consulting. His specialties include Enterprise & Cloud Security, Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, Azure, Active Directory, Exchange, Hyper-V, and Windows operating systems. His consulting engagements range from architecting and securing small and medium-sized business (SMB) networks to engineering network services for large enterprises with over 30,000 users. He has also been involved with helping businesses with their cybersecurity strategy, network security audits, enterprise security risk assessments, cloud migrations, vendor risk management, and regulatory compliance initiatives (HIPAA, GDPR, ISO 27001, NIST, etc.).

Zubair excels in troubleshooting hardware and software problems, and his real-world experience is one of his greatest strengths. He applies his vast experience in enterprise security to almost every consulting project in which he is involved.

Training

Since he received his Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) certificate, Zubair has trained tens of thousands of students across the United States, including many Train-the-Trainer courses at Microsoft. His students include Network Administrators, IT Managers, Security Architects, Security Analysts, Business Managers, IT Consultants, and other IT professionals. After the magazine was rebranded as ITProToday.com, Zubair continued to serve as a Contributing Author and a Tech Editor.

For the past couple of decades, Zubair has worked on dozens of projects at Microsoft as an independent contractor and shared knowledge with various Microsoft groups as a Subject Matter Expert (SME).

Enterprise Security

Zubair is an internationally recognized information security professional. He received a master’s degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance and has served on the EC-Council’s Certified Network Defender International Advisory Board for seven years. Zubair holds several security certifications, such as Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI), Certified Network Defense Architect (CNDA), Security+, and Microsoft 365 Certified Security Administrator Associate.

Enterprise security has been Zubair’s passion since he wrote his first book on a security topic. He has spoken publicly on privacy and cybersecurity issues at numerous conferences, workshops, and webinars; taught many security courses over the years to public and private organizations and offered training/consulting services to the U.S. Air Force, Army, and Navy on cybersecurity matters. He has also provided strategic guidance to the U.S. Air Force in their Active Directory design project.

Zubair wrote the final exam questions for the Digital Forensics course, which was part of the master’s degree in Cybersecurity at Western Governors University. He was a member of the team that helped North Seattle College develop an Ethical Hacking curriculum. He was also instrumental in helping South Seattle College develop a cybersecurity program, which included a Network Security Administration degree.

Community Involvement

Zubair is a member of InfraGard, a partnership between the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and members of the private sector. The InfraGard members include business executives, entrepreneurs, military and government officials, computer professionals, academia, and state and local law enforcement, each dedicated to contributing industry-specific insight and advancing national security.

In 2004, he started his technical blog. Alexander’s Blog covers a wide range of topics on Microsoft products and services in 50 categories. It’s dedicated to serving the IT community across the globe and receives several million hits each month from readers in over 190 countries and territories.

In 2008, he started Seattle IT Pro User Group (SITPUG) to serve the greater Puget Sound IT community around Seattle and its suburbs. SITPUG focuses primarily on Microsoft products and services and is now a LinkedIn group.

In September 2020, Zubair joined the newly formed Western Governors University Alumni Cybersecurity Club. The club is an online community for alumni working in the cybersecurity field. The club holds talks and demonstrations to discuss cybersecurity issues.

In 2023, he was nominated by EC-Council as a Cybersecurity Career Mentor. Zubair has mentored thousands of IT professionals and college students through many programs, such as Microsoft MVP Program, University of Washington’s Huskies@Work Program, Microsoft Certified Trainer Program, South Seattle College Cybersecurity Advisory Board, etc.

Sports & Recreation

Computers are not his only passion. Zubair considers himself to be one of the biggest sports fans in the world. He likes to participate in sports and watches just about every sport you can imagine. His athletic career began with track and field in the first grade and continued throughout his primary and middle school. He received a scholarship and excelled in competitive sports in high school and college.

While attending the University of Washington, Zubair was regularly involved in recreational sports activities, such as roller-skating, squash, table tennis, racquetball, badminton, tennis, pickleball, soccer, swimming, and archery. He is ambidextrous and plays all racket sports equally well with either hand. He taught roller-skating classes for about ten years at the University of Washington. At one point, he was roller-skating 400 miles a month at an indoor roller-skating rink.

Before he started his professional career in technology, Zubair won five trophies at the Northwest Roller-Skating Championship, including the overall roller-skating champion title. He was also the winner of the Washington State Open Table Tennis championship. If you ask him for his favorite sport, he will name at least a dozen. His other interests include mind-challenging activities, chess, puzzles, quizzes, card games, and performing magic tricks.

What does Zubair think about his career in the high-tech industry? He likes to tell his friends he doesn’t have a job; he gets paid for his hobbies.
